In what may emerge as one the biggest controversies in its 25 year old history, the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) beauty pageant, organized by Silverbird Group, is currently enmeshed in an overage scandal.
Currently, a fresh crisis is rocking the beauty pageant as the organizers of the Miss World, recently shortlisted, the first runner up, Damiete Charles Granville as the Nigerian representative instead of the reigning MGBN, Isabella Ayuk.
The choice of Isabella Ayuk was greeted with condemnations by some critics who alleged she was well past the acceptable age limit, when she was announced winner, a couple of months ago. It was further alleged that her emergence was highly influenced from above.
While describing the decision to send Damiete Charles Granville to the Miss World beauty pageant as ‘in the interest of all the beauty ambassadors and the country’, a statement signed by Guy Murray Bruce, Group Vice President, Silverbird Group, urged Nigerians to pray for a successful outing.
“The decision was in the best interest of the beauty ambassadors, the company and the country at large. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary in the world of beauty pageantry, it’s our wish not to only raise the bar but replicate the groundbreaking records achieved by Agbani Darego as the first Black Africa’s Miss World (2001) as well as some past queens who have achieved remarkable results at some renowned international pageants in the recent past.
While we seek your understanding, we also urge you to pray for their victories at the various global beauty pageants where they will be flying the country’s flag.”
“The management of Silverbird, organizers of the annual Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria and Africa’s longest running beauty pageant will be sending MBGN first runner up, Miss Diamette Charles Granville, to represent the country at the Miss World pageant holding in Mongolia, China in August.”
MBGN winner, Miss Isabella Agbo Ayuk will represent Nigeria at The Miss Universe. MBGN second runner up, Miss Ifeoma Umeokeke will be at the Miss Tourism International holding later in the year in China.
